Pieter Bruegel “The Census at Bethlehem”

Pieter Bruegel the Elder was a Dutch and Flemish renaissance painter. He was known for his landscapes and peasant scenes. Two of his works are representations of the “The Census at Bethlehem” (1566) and “The Massacre of the Innocents” (1565–1567).

Although it is certainly not my intention to level undue criticism, accurate visual representations of the nativity story are essentially non-existent, as they are/were almost universally based on the traditional version of the nativity.

Bruegel is no exception. In both paintings the village of Bethlehem is shown with a layer of snow indicating he believed the nativity (and the Massacre of the Innocents) took place in winter, and that Bethlehem in winter has snow.
